Management of stray cats and dogs is an ongoing cost to the veterinary industry that most of us
don’t have the time or space to manage in clinic on a routine basis. We of course will take in any
injured animal and provide first aid treatment until owner’s can be contacted.
We are happy to scan stray animals for a microchip, however based on the time of day there may be
a wait time and if we are unable to easily reach the owner registered on the microchip we may or
may not be able to house the dog or cat until the owner can be reached or the council contacted for
pick up (depending on how many surgical/hospital patients we have at the time). If our cages are full
the stray dog or cat will need to go home with you and you will need to contact the council for a pick
up. In the meantime, if an owner gets back to us, if you consent, we can pass on your details directly
so you can arrange a pick up.
From our understanding the local councils are currently working on creating regional kennel facilities
for better future management of stray dogs and cats that are separate from veterinary clinics.
