Poisoning/Toxicity

The list of poisonous or toxic substances is forever growing and this can be a problem for pets of any age and species!

To name a few:

Chocolate
Grapes/raisins
Macadamia nuts
Rat bait
Snail bait
Certain types of mushrooms
Permethrin (affects cats – this product is in some dog topical flea and tick preventatives)
House hold chemicals
Overdoses of medications (animal or human)
Ticks
Snakes
Lilies (cats), wandering dew (dogs), new weeds/plants in paddocks are a potential risk to browsing animals (goats/sheep/alpacas) – please call us for more specific information.

If you are concerned about any of the above, please contact us immediately so we can assess the urgency of the situation. The sooner they are seen after intoxication the more likely we can reduce the amount of toxin absorbed and thus give your pet the best chance of making a full recovery.

Depending on the toxin treatment will vary but could include: inducing vomiting, fluid support, stomach and bowel lavage, anti-toxins if appropriate and blood work if needed.

Some signs of poisoning include but are not limited to: drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, red urine, blood from any orifice, pale gums, seizures, tremoring and wobbliness.
